The Federal Government has approved a reform of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, with a new six-week orientation structure, 11 specialised career streams and changes to deployment, leadership, camp standards and final ceremony.
The reform was approved by the Federal Executive Council on Monday and the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described it as the first full review of the 53-year-old scheme since it was established in 1973.

What has changed under the new NYSC reform?
The NYSC orientation programme will now run for six weeks instead of three weeks.
The new camp period will be split into three two-week phases and corps members will be placed into specialised streams after choosing from the approved list during registration.
How will the new NYSC orientation camp be structured?
The orientation programme will be divided into three phases, each lasting two weeks.
First two weeks: Civic duty and leadership
The first two weeks will focus on civic responsibility, national values and leadership development.
This phase will be used to strengthen basic national service values before corps members move into career-related learning.
Second two weeks: Career and money skills
The next two weeks will cover career mapping, basic accounting and financial literacy.
Business planning and access to finance will also be covered during this phase, while a structured career day programme will allow corps members to engage directly with the public.
Final two weeks: Stream-specific training
The last two weeks will be used for stream-specific training.
This training will follow each corps member’s chosen stream, academic background and skill profile.
What are the 11 specialised NYSC streams?
Every corps member will be required to choose one of 11 specialised streams during registration.
The approved streams are:
- Agric Corps
- Medical Corps
- Education Corps
- Tech and Digital Corps
- Legal Corps
- Public Service Corps
- Infrastructure Corps
- Green Corps
- Enterprise Corps
- Creative Economy Corps
- Paramilitary and Security Corps
A corps member who registers under Medical Corps, for example, will be recognised as a member of the Medical Corps and will receive training linked to that stream during the final two weeks of orientation.
Why are the NYSC streams being introduced?
The streams are meant to give corps members practical training linked to their academic background, career interest and Nigeria’s workforce needs.
Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Coordination, said the streams will guide how corps members are trained under the new framework.

Deployment will now consider security realities across different parts of Nigeria.
Usman said the reform will review how corps members are posted across states, with more attention to security challenges that may affect service locations.
