What are the general ATBU postgraduate admission requirements?

Entry requirements depend on whether the applicant is seeking admission into a postgraduate diploma, master’s degree or Ph.D. programme.

Candidates are expected to satisfy the stated O’ level requirements and the academic conditions attached to their chosen qualification.

What are the ATBU PGD admission requirements?

Every PGD applicant is required to meet the university’s matriculation requirements, including a credit pass in English Language and Mathematics at O’ level through WAEC, NECO or NABTEB.

Applicants must also fall within at least one of the following categories:

• Graduates of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University or another recognised university with at least a Third-Class Honours Degree
• HND holders with a minimum of Lower Credit from a recognised tertiary school
• Holders of other qualifications, together with relevant field experience considered acceptable by the university

What are the ATBU master’s degree requirements?

Every master’s applicant is required to meet the matriculation requirements, including credit passes in English Language and Mathematics at O’ level through WAEC, NECO or NABTEB.

An applicant must also meet one of the following academic conditions:

• An approved first degree from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University with at least Second-Class Honours, Lower Division
• An honours degree from an approved university with a CGPA of 3.00 or above on a 5.00-point scale
• A CGPA from 2.40 to 2.99, together with at least three years of post-graduation experience
• A Third-Class Honours Degree, together with at least five years of post-graduation experience
• An appropriate postgraduate diploma from ATBU or another recognised tertiary school, with at least a credit-level pass
• An unclassified degree with an average grade of C or above
• An HND with at least a credit pass, together with a relevant postgraduate diploma passed at credit level

A qualifying examination may be required before registration is approved or at a suitable stage of the applicant’s coursework or research.

What are the ATBU Ph.D. admission requirements?

Every Ph.D. applicant is required to meet the matriculation requirements, including a credit pass in English Language and Mathematics at O’ level through WAEC, NECO or NABTEB.

Eligible applicants include:

• ATBU graduates who hold a master’s degree suitable for the proposed area of study
• Graduates of other recognised universities who hold a master’s degree with a CGPA of at least 3.50 on a 5.00-point scale

A Ph.D. applicant may be required to pass a qualifying examination, complete a probationary period or meet both conditions. Any probationary period will not exceed 12 calendar months.

How will the ATBU postgraduate application be completed?

Applications will be completed online between 13 July 2026 and 13 October 2026. The application form is N11,000.

Candidates may apply through the ATBU postgraduate application website or the ATBU direct admission portal.

The following process will be used:

1. The applicant will visit either of the approved application portals.
2. The application fee of N11,000 will be paid through the portal.
3. The online form will be completed carefully with accurate personal and academic details.
4. Scanned copies of the required credentials will be uploaded.
5. A valid email address and active phone number will be provided for further correspondence.
6. The completed form will be submitted online before the deadline.

Candidates are expected to check every entry before submission, since errors in names, qualifications, contact details or programme choice may affect further correspondence.

Which documents will be required?

Applicants are expected to submit scanned copies of their credentials with the online application.

The application requirements include:

• Relevant academic credentials
• Valid email address
• Active phone number
• NYSC discharge or exemption certificate
• Research proposal or synopsis for Ph.D. applicants
• Academic transcript sent by the applicant’s previous school

Only applicants who possess an NYSC discharge or exemption certificate are eligible to apply.

How will academic transcripts be submitted?

Each applicant is required to arrange with their previous school or schools for hard copies of their academic transcripts to be sent to the prospective Head of Department for the proposed programme.

Admission consideration will be based on the receipt of a valid academic transcript. Applicants should make the transcript arrangement early enough for the document to reach the relevant department.

Uploading personal copies of results or certificates does not replace the transcript that must be forwarded by the former school.

Do Ph.D. applicants need a research proposal?

Yes. Every Ph.D. applicant is required to upload a research proposal or synopsis while completing the online application.

The uploaded document should relate to the proposed area of study stated on the application form.

What is the ATBU postgraduate application deadline?

The postgraduate application portal will close on 13 October 2026.

Applications are available from 13 July 2026, giving candidates a stated application period of three months. All forms, credentials and other required uploads are expected to be submitted before the portal closes.

How will successful applicants be notified?

Successful applicants will be notified through email.

Candidates should use a valid email address that they can access regularly, since further admission correspondence will be sent through the contact details supplied during the application.

Can a Third-Class graduate apply for ATBU postgraduate admission?

A Third-Class graduate may apply for a postgraduate diploma.

A Third-Class graduate may also be considered for a master’s degree where the applicant has at least five years of post-graduation experience, subject to the other stated requirements.

Can an HND holder apply?

An HND holder with at least Lower Credit may apply for a postgraduate diploma.

For a master’s application, an HND applicant is required to have at least a credit pass and a relevant postgraduate diploma passed at credit level from a recognised tertiary school.

Is an NYSC certificate compulsory?

Yes. Applicants are required to possess either an NYSC discharge certificate or an NYSC exemption certificate.

Applications from persons without either document will not be accepted under the stated admission conditions.

How much is the ATBU postgraduate form?

The ATBU postgraduate application form is N11,000.

Payment will be made through the approved online application portal while the form is being completed.
