The National Examinations Council, NECO, has released the modalities for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, Re-Sit examination after the release of the 2026 NECO BECE results.
The Re-Sit examination is for candidates with conditional deficiencies in Mathematics, English Studies or both.
What Is BECE Used For?
The Basic Education Certificate Examination, BECE, is the examination for candidates who are in their final year of Junior Secondary School.
The certificate is used for movement from JSS 3, under the basic education class, to Senior Secondary School, SSS1.
BECE certificate has replaced the primary school certificate as the first school leaving certificate.
Who Conducts BECE?
Each state of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory conduct BECE for their candidates.
NECO conducts BECE for Federal Unity Colleges and other allied schools.
Private secondary schools may also take part, provided they have approval from their State Ministries of Education.
Who Is Expected To Sit For The 2026 BECE Re-Sit?
Candidates with conditional deficiencies in Mathematics or English Studies are expected to sit for the Re-Sit examination.
A candidate may be affected in one subject or both subjects.
The examination gives affected candidates the chance to remedy the deficiency, gain the required certification and be considered for admission and placement into SSS1 without repeating a full academic year.
When Will The 2026 BECE Re-Sit Examination Hold?
The 2026 BECE Re-Sit examination has been scheduled for Wednesday 22 July and Thursday 23 July 2026.
The papers will be for Mathematics and English Studies.

How Much Is The 2026 BECE Re-Sit Fee?
The 2026 BECE Re-Sit fee is ₦3,750 per subject per candidate.
A candidate sitting for one subject will pay for one subject, while a candidate sitting for Mathematics and English Studies will pay for both subjects.
What Are Schools And Candidates Expected To Note?
Registration and attendance at the BECE Re-Sit examination are mandatory for affected candidates.
Any unpaid BECE Re-Sit registration fee for candidates from a school will be imposed on the subsequent year’s BECE registration for that school, whether the affected candidates are present or absent for the examination.
Schools are therefore expected to treat the registration process as part of the candidate’s BECE completion process, since the Re-Sit is linked to certification and SSS1 placement.
